Amethyst Rings
Amethyst Rings: Properties
Although a fairly common and widely
known mineral, top quality amethysts are actually rare. The amethyst has a broad
range of shades of its home color of purple. The pale, rather pinkish amethyst
is known as The Rose of France. Although certainly attractive, is not actually
in great demand. By far the most desirable variety of amethyst is the intense
violet stone with red firings. Although mined in Brazil and Uruguay, it is found
notably in the Ekaterinburg vicinity of Russia and is commonly referred to as
Siberian amethyst.
The color is due to the presence of iron, aluminum and manganese. Different
percentages of the elements along with natural radioactive radiation determine
the intensity of the shade. Interestingly, there is a naturally occurring
variation of the amethyst called the ametrine, which is bi-colored purple and
yellow.
Although the amethyst is reasonably hard, at 7 on Moh’s Scale, care should be
taken. For instance, the amethyst should not be worn sunbathing, since they are
prone to lose color. Also sudden changes in temperature have been known to be
detrimental to the amethyst.
