The name, aquamarine, and its translation certainly give rise to the legend of the stone's origin. One prominent and picturesque story has it that not only were aquamarines found in the treasure chests of mermaids, but that the mermaids' tails were actually made from the stuff! With this in mind, it's easy to understand the old sailors' belief that if he kept an aquamarine in his pocket, not only would he be kept safe at sea, but it would prevent sea sickness and actually promote peaceful sleep. It was further alleged that the aquamarine would impart to its owner the courage it took to ply his living on the ocean.

Coming back to dry land, it was believed that the aquamarine had the power to heal and cleanse the body and protect it from poisons. In many quarters, it was said that if you were to drop an aquamarine in a glass of water and then drink the water, not only would your hiccups be cured, but your vision would clear up as well. With these things in mind, it is only natural that the aquamarine would ensure that married couples would be able to settle their differences in a soothing and peaceful manner. Communication would be improved and they would navigate their way through life's changes as easily as could be.

Looking back to pagan times, it is believed to have been an aquamarine that was used by the Druids in their practice of skrying – or divination. The Celtic Scots thought that the aquamarine to be a 'Stone of Power' or a healing stone to be used wherever and whenever it was needed. It has been ascertained that the first crystal balls were fashioned from beryl. From the color, it probably was a pale blue aquamarine.

Finally, it has been held that when an aquamarine is placed in the mouth, that person would be able to call forth the devil and receive answers to any questions asked. Could this have inspired the fluid fiddle playing of Charlie Daniels during his confrontation with Mr. Scratch in The Devil Went Down to Georgia? It's been said that the sea will keep her secrets. Like the sea, so it seems will the aquamarine.
