Garnet Gemstone Jewelry

The garnet is actually a group of minerals of the silicate family, all having the same crystal structure, which has been used as a gemstone and an industrial abrasive since the Bronze Age. The name 'garnet' itself, not to be pejorative, could be seen to be somewhat abrasive since it comes from the Latin 'granatus'. This translates as 'granular, grain, or seed-like. It also has a direct connection in color, nature and name to 'punica granatum' the pomegranate, which has seeds similar to red garnet crystals.

The garnet is unique in that different varieties of the gem have different rankings on the Mohs scale of hardness ranging from 6.5 to 7.5, which is actually quite a big difference. This comes from the fact that their chemical composition differs from one variety to the next. It stands to reason that only the harder variety of garnet would be used as an abrasive.

As a gemstone, the garnet is associated with Tuesday and the month of January. A multi-anniversary stone, the garnet has been known to represent the 2nd, 6th, and 18th wedding remembrances.

According to some translations of Exodus, the garnet was the stone which stood for the tribe of Jacob's 3rd son, Levi, on Aaron's breastplate of judgment. It should be mentioned that at that time, the garnet was sometimes referred to as a carbuncle, which means 'little spark'.
