Onyx Bracelets
Onyx Symbolism and "Myth"
Like all gemstones, the onyx has characteristics and attributes associated
with it that are transferred to its wearer. One general physical trait is that
the onyx is supposed to strengthen the skeletal system. Increased happiness,
good intuition and solid instincts are also bestowed by the onyx on its owner.
Those qualities might seem to be at odds with the following legend. Worn
around the neck, the onyx is supposed to cool the ardors of love and decrease
sexual desire. The noted 16th century Italian mathematician and physician,
Giralamo Cardona, claimed in his book De Subtilitate Renum, that the onyx was
used for exactly that purpose in India in particular.

Nonetheless, today the onyx is associated with strength and endurance in men
and married women. Worn by single girls however, the onyx denotes fickleness and
foolishness – perhaps harkening back to the playful ways of Cupid.
Besides being a marvelous center stone in a piece of jewelry, the onyx can
serve as an ideal backdrop for carved rock crystal, marcacite or rubies – such
as exist in art deco pieces. Much commercial onyx today has had its color
enhanced and deepened by way of heating and/or dying.
