History and Use of Garnet Gemstones

To be sure, the garnet played many roles throughout history. It's been said that Noah used a garnet lantern to help him steer the ark through the night's darkness. For the same utilitarian reason, explorers and travelers were known to have packed a garnet or two, and also for the protection it was believed to provide.

Samples of garnet jewelry have been found in relics of the Egyptian, Greek and Roman civilizations. In those times too, garnets were exchanged between friends to demonstrate their affection and the hope that they might meet again.

There are both physical and emotional benefits that have been attributed to the garnet through the centuries. The garnet is said to instill confidence and nobility in men and pride in women, and has long been associate with power and productivity. Pulverized and moistened, the garnet was actually used as a poultice to relieve fever. It was also said to increase the sex drive – which would seem to act in contradiction to the previously mentioned use.

It has been reported that in the American Southwest as well as among some tribes in Asia, garnets were used as bullets because they were believed to inflict a more severe wound than would lead.
