Onyx in the Bible
In Exodus, the onyx was one of the stones on the Hoshen – Aaron's
breastplate. There is, however, no telling if this particular onyx was black or
not. But, it was the tribe of Joseph – he of the coat of many colors and the
11th and favorite son of Jacob – that was represented by the onyx.
When an onyx is white, reddish-brown with white and lighter brown bands, it
is known as a 'sardonyx' – which stone later came to be associated with the
apostle, Phillip. It is said that the sardonyx was a favorite of the Roman
general Publius Cornelius Scipio, who often wore one as a charm. It might not
have helped him militarily, but it did favor his son, Scipio Africanus Major.
The younger Scipio was the conqueror of Hannibal and was arguably the greatest
general of ancient times. In a more practical sense, the sardonyx was often
carved and used in a signet ring to be dipped in wax and pressed on documents to
seal them officially. It was the material of choice because the wax would not
stick to it.
